Your Perfect Cinco de Mayo: Spitfire Margarita Mix
A margarita with a kick? Sounds like the perfect drink to accompany your Cinco de Mayo celebrations! I recently had the pleasure of tasting one of famed New York event planner Bronson Van Wyck’s cocktail mixes – the Spitfire Margarita Mix.
I guess I’m a bit behind. The Spitfire Margarita Mix was showcased alongside the Hellfire Club Bloody Mary Mix in his 6-week holiday pop-up shop this past December, a store designed to make holiday entertaining easier. Van Wyck hit the nail on the head – with this margarita mix, any entertaining is easy. At $24 a bottle, it is a bit pricey, but it’s definitely a crowd pleaser.
The mix is nice and light – it’s not too syrupy like a lot of margarita mixes. I served margaritas on the rocks, with two parts mix and one part tequila; 2-3 parts mix to tequila is recommended. It doesn’t seem spicy at first, but it has a great kick at the end, the kind that’s strong but doesn’t linger.
As an added bonus, there’s a story behind the name:
“In the Battle of Britain, flights of the fighter plane Spitfire shot down their German opponents at the rate of two or three to one, which is incidentally the ideal ratio of this mix to tequila.”
Since I’m a huge fan of spicy drinks on their own, it’s just a pleasant coincidence that Cinco de Mayo has arrived. Yet I won’t have to wait until next year to make another Spitfire Margarita. I highly recommend you don’t wait either.
